General Information

Tartan with history. Buchanan Antique

Tweedmill weaves this virgin wool tartan blanket in the style of the traditional Buchanan tartan. The lands of the Buchanan clan lie on Loch Lomond and in Stirlingshire in the Central Lowlands. The clan's motto is: "Clarior hinc honos" (hence the honor). Like many tartan patterns, the Buchanan tartan also comes in different variations - the pattern always remains the same, only the color tones vary. The Antique (or Ancient) tartan features soft, muted colors, as is common with old tartans. The reason for this was dyeing with animal and vegetable dyes, which was common until the middle of the 19th century. After that, chemical dyes were used more and more often, which produced much stronger colors, such as those found in modern tartans. This blanket is woven from robust New Zealand virgin wool, which is obtained in an animal-friendly way, as mulesing is not used in New Zealand. It is hard-wearing and a little firmer to the touch, so it can be taken out onto balconies and patios with confidence.

Scottish tartans, Welsh craftsmanship

Tartans are as much a part of Scotland as single malt, bagpipes and kilts. The famous checked patterns originated in the Highlands in the north of Scotland. Patterns and colors initially varied regionally, presumably because the wool was dyed with plants, mosses and berries from the respective region. This later led to the assignment of certain tartans to the individual clans. Thousands of these patterns are now known and have been registered in the "Scottish Register of Tartans" since 2009.

The Tweedmill weaving mill, located in north-east Wales, produces blankets with historical tartan patterns such as the Antique Buchanan as well as modern interpretations and classic designs. Weaving is done in the traditional way, which is time-consuming, as appropriately dyed yarns are used for the individual stripes - the "setts" - of the check pattern. In addition, the loom has to be set up anew not only for each tartan, but also for each individual size of the woven fabric - this is still done by hand. Warping, the setting up of the warp beam, is particularly time-consuming: This involves assembling a number of parallel warp threads of the same length from many threads or yarn from many bobbins.
