General Information

Scottish patterns, Welsh craftsmanship

The Tweedmill weaving mill, located in the north-east of Wales, produces blankets with historical tartan patterns, but also with modern interpretations of the famous check patterns such as this Morello Check. Tartans originated in the Highlands in the north of Scotland. Patterns and colors initially varied regionally, presumably because the wool was dyed with plants, mosses and berries from the respective region. This later led to the assignment of certain tartans to the individual clans. There are now thousands of these patterns, which have been registered in the "Scottish Register of Tartans" since 2009.

They are woven in the traditional way, which is quite time-consuming, as the individual stripes - the "setts" - of the check pattern are woven with appropriately dyed yarns. In addition, the loom has to be set up anew not only for each tartan, but also for each individual size of the woven fabric - this is still done by hand. Warping, the setting up of the warp beam, is particularly time-consuming: In this process, many threads or the yarn from many bobbins are joined together to form a group of parallel warp threads of the same length. This blanket is woven from robust New Zealand wool, which has been obtained in an animal-friendly way, as mulesing is not used in New Zealand. It is slightly firmer to the touch and quite hard-wearing, so you can take it out on the balcony or patio.

Tweedmill. Made in Britain. Woven to last

The Tweedmill weaving mill in Wales, in the county of Flintshire, has been producing home textiles, outdoor blankets and accessories from wool since 1971. The range extends from soft tweed made from fine lambswool to traditional tartans and blankets made from New Zealand wool and picnic blankets made from recycled wool. The designs are inspired by the colors of Welsh nature, the forests and the coast, but also surprise with bold tones and unusual color combinations. They are mainly created by the company's own designers, but the family business also encourages young creative minds: the winning designs of the annual Drapers Memorial Textile Prize are realized in a separate collection.
