General Information
Christmassy winter forest. Masterfully moved
Christmas pyramids are one of the most atmospheric illuminations of the Christmas season. Whether large or small, at a public Christmas market or on a private table: with their moving interplay of light and figure, they create a festive, warmly glowing atmosphere and attract everyone's attention. We owe their development in particular to the artisans of the Erzgebirge, who gradually combined the medieval rotating tree, the 18th century light frame and (according to some sources) the principle of the horse-drawn pyramid to create today's Christmas pyramid.
This table pyramid from a Seiffen manufactory discreetly adds a second storey to the classic one-storey design. Made from solid beech and ash wood, the structure is so simple and delicate that it blends decoratively into any interior. Each individual figure reveals the care and skill with which the work has been carried out - the production of the chip trees alone requires skilled craftsmanship and dexterity. As soon as the rising warmth of the candle flames sets the pyramid wings in rotation, the two-storey, neatly hand-turned winter forest motif with Kiepenkerl and Forester's Man, surrounded by fir trees and forest animals, turns smoothly. The brass-plated candle plates hold standard tree candles and catch any dripping wax.
Folk art from the Erzgebirge. Seiffen
The fact that a famous wood art developed in the originally densely forested Erzgebirge is not only explained by the availability of the material. As a branch of industry, handicrafts became all the more important as the local mining industry rapidly lost resources and profitability. Folk art slipped into this gap, which mining - no less than Christmas - still shaped with numerous motifs. A center of wood art emerged around Seiffen, where one of the first specialized trade schools was founded in 1853 to promote handicrafts. In the so-called Toy Corner, small and large craft businesses still produce the classics of the folk art of the Erzgebirge: from hoop animals and smoking men to miner figures and nutcrackers to candle arches and wing pyramids.
