Pure Shea Butter: Caring for Dry Skin.
Shea butter, also known as karité butter, is particularly rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and pro-vitamin A. It provides the skin with a great deal of moisture and keeps it smooth and supple. This particular shea butter has a very solid consistency since it is bottled pure and unrefined. After a short period in the palm of the hand, however, the butter becomes quite soft and easy to apply. It cares for very dry and heavily stressed skin. It is manufactured without adding any perfume so that it retains the typical scent of shea butter.
The African butter tree – the shea tree or ghariti.
The shea tree grows in the West African savannah and occupies an important position in African everyday life, because it is used extensively for food, as a major source of dietary fat, and for medicinal purposes. Nevertheless, not only have the various attempts to cultivate it met with failure it also only achieves its full profitability after more than 50 years. Therefore the shea trees are farmed in so-called cultivated tree parks. Once a year the tree produces fruit, the fat rich kernels of which – so-called shea nuts –are the source of shea respectively karité butter. While the origin of the English word is the common name for the tree in the Bambara Language of Mali, karité is the French name which stems from “ghariti” – the tree is called “ghariti” in the Wolof language of Senegal.
