Breakfast board fin, oak

The fin or dorsal fin stabilizes the swimming movements of whales and sharks. The triangular shape is characteristic, an identification feature by which the animals can be recognized from a long distance. Danger ahead? Not on your breakfast table! Because there our breakfast board "Fin" makes an exquisitely good figure. The cabinetmaker Konrad Horsch makes it exclusively for us from the solid wood of oak.

The design according to our own design, the wood from forests in the Sauerland: That is sustainability for us. If you take a closer look, you will also recognize the origin of the wood by the fine, hole-like feeding marks of the millimeter worm that has made its way through the tree trunks. We did not want to remove these feeding marks, nor did we want to have the wood sorted out completely, since the quality and longevity of the end product are not affected by them. They are symbolic of the fact that our forests are no longer spared the effects of climate change. In the meantime, drought damage can cause even the strongest oak to become susceptible and less stable and resistant.

But Konrad Horsch wouldn't be Konrad Horsch if he didn't get the best out of what is supposed to be leftover wood. He manufactures our breakfast board Finne in two versions: Natural oak and - with a naturalbraunem, invitingly warm hue - steamed oak. Since steamed, the dark wood retains its character, traces of use will not be seen on it even in the long run. The sawn, smoothly sanded board with a short handle and neatly rounded edges is made even more velvety by a surface treatment with wood butter, which you can (and should) easily repeat at home. Prepared in this way, the oak wood will also tolerate contact with cooking oil and fatty foods. Tip: Two breakfast boards laid side by side make a formidable serving board, for example, for a hearty snack or, once visitors are in the house, to bring a Grazing Platter with all sorts of savory delicacies to the table.
