Originally it had a moleskin-like textile cover, that small, flexible, jacket- and pocket-sized notebook that served Bruce Chatwin and many other writers of the first half of the 20th century for pre-literary purposes. Of the many new editions, we consider this one the most well-made.

If exercise books and the likes are still regarded with some justification as disposable articles, this does not apply to notebooks. They will – set, their content is of value – soon become archival material, and corresponding processing standards aiming at durability should apply to them. This is the case with these notebooks from southern Germany.
