    General Information

The Leather for Shoes Par Excellence: Horse Leather. Shell Cordovan.

Prima facie, this is an everyday shoe: half-high, giving the foot a secure hold; and in the robust double-stitched make with profiled rubber outsole resilient and durable. Very rare and anything but ordinary is the leather this shoe is made of - Shell Cordovan. The famous leather that comes from very specific and small areas of skin (namely the croup) of a special breed of heavy horses has an outstaning reputation among shoemakers. Dinkelacker sources the leather from the Horween tannery in Chicago, which has specialized in horse leather since 1905 and has a monopoly position in the tanning industry worldwide by now. The leather is of superior quality and very durable; its fiber structure is dense and firm. Its soft and smooth quality owes the leather to its high fat content. If you allow the shoe a little time to run in, it will soon sit like a glove. The paint is applied by hand in a deep bordeaux red, which is considered the classic colour for Shell Cordovan. In the last step, the leather is pummeled with a glass drum and receives its fine, shimmering shine. These shoes are only available from us.

    Handcraft from Budapest. Heinrich Dinkelacker.

Shoes from the workshop of Heinrich Dinkelacker have been made in Budapest since the 1960s and prior to that from 1879 in Sindelfingen in southern Germany. What makes these shoes outstanding is their fit, accomplished by means of exceptional craftsmanship. Each Dinkelacker shoe requires 300 different procedures. At first, stencils are made that correspond to the model design. After careful examination and selection of the upper leather, the templates for cutting the shaft parts are applied to the leather, and the cut is executed. This leather is then steamed and the shaft is stretched over the wooden shoe lasts, nailed and the following day re-pinched. After a week the leather is taken from the last – machine-made shoes usually only stay on the last for 30 minutes! This prolonged period of rest guarantees that the shoe maintains its form. It will fit for many years to come. The insole is crafted by hand to the shape of the last, uppers, lining and welts are then sewn to it – there is no better way to connect these parts of a shoe.
