The traditional Dudu-Osun® black soap is based on shea butter—also known as karité butter—which is used throughout much of West Africa for washing the skin and hair. The soap owes its dark color to the addition of black palm oil and the ash from palm kernels and cocoa fruits. Shea butter and aloe vera extract provide its nourishing and moisturizing properties. Lemon juice, limenextract, and African sandalwood (camwood) give the black soap a crisp, earthy scent.
The black soap gently and deeply cleanses the skin on the face and body, combining the properties of an exfoliator, a cleansing lotion, and a cream. It can also be used as shaving soap or even as a face mask: To do this, simply apply a thin layer of the soft lather to your face, let it dry, and then rinse your face.

The shea nut tree, which grows in the West African savanna, has significant economic value in Africa. However, attempts to cultivate it have so far failed, and it does not reach its full yield potential until it is about 50 years old. Even when land is cleared for new fields, it is therefore usually spared and managed in so-called tree-cultivation parks—where the scattered trees with crops grown beneath them resemble a park landscape. Once a year, the shea nut tree produces fruit; karité butter is extracted from its high-fat kernels, known as shea nuts. Shea butter has excellent nourishing properties; it is rich in vitamin E, provitamin A, and unsaturated fatty acids. When processed into a cream, shea butter moisturizes the skin and keeps it smooth and supple.
