    General Information

Sautoir necklace. The accessory of the Charleston era

A piece of jewelry with history: at the beginning of the 20th century, women began to wear their pearl jewelry not only tightly around the neck. Long necklaces went better with the flowing cuts of the new dresses; they were worn navel-length and falling wide. None other than Coco Chanel made the sautoir necklace popular in the 1920s - classically worn with the "Little Black Dress" as a generously falling necklace, looped three times and worn tightly or hanging over a wide neckline in the back. For our necklace, it is more than a meter long, about 200 freshwater cultured pearls are strung together. The sautoir necklace comes from Pforzheim.

Cultivation of mother of pearl. Cultured pearls

In Japan, Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in 1921 in developing a modern pearl culture method for saltwater pearls and gaining important experience in cultivating the Akoya pearl. Experiences from which one benefits today not only in the Northwest Pacific, but also in Oceania, where the dangerous pearl diving has meanwhile been replaced by the harvesting of cultured pearls. From the great variety of pearls and pearl jewelry, we have selected jewelry that expresses the typical features of the different pearl types: the almost flawless roundness of the Akoya pearls, the radiant, flower-white luster of even comparatively small freshwater pearls, and the grandeur of the Tahiti cultured pearl.
