    What is possible. Mouth-blown glass.

This bowl is actually still created the way hollow glass was formed in ancient times - in many small steps and with a lot of patience at the glassmaker's pipe, with the help of which the glassmaker repeatedly picks up a new batch of liquid crystal glass from the melting furnace, in order to be able to work the bowl from the so-called Kölbl. He has to keep the pipe constantly moving, turning it and blowing it in again and again until a hollow body is formed. Other tools used by the glassmaker are the wulger wood and the gutter made of wet beech or pear wood, which he uses to shape the hot glass mass. Periodically, he must hold the glass on the pipe in the fire so that he can continue to shape it - if it cools down too much, it becomes tough.
The glassmaker places the hot glass mass, which has been twisted into an elongated shape, in an optical preform made of steel and blows it out until the mass takes on the specified shape and relief-like nubs form. While still hot, the glassmaker then rolls the mass in colored flour, heats it again, and continues shaping with the Wulger wood - the colored glass bonds with the base body. Again, the pipe must always remain in motion, the glassmaker once again picks up crystal glass and, while constantly turning, blows the batch into the finished mold made of beech wood. At the flattened bottom of the bowl, a tack iron is finally pressed on to be able to hold the workpiece further, while on the other side of the glassmaker knocks off the pipe and with the help of the Aufreibschere the strongly heated, still closed edge of the bowl expands and shapes - and turns and turns.

Preserve craft. The glass school in Zwiesel.

At the Zwiesel glass school, this craft is still taught. The school has been in existence since 1904 and its reputation radiates far beyond the borders of the region. At the time of its foundation, it was still located in the middle of the center of the glass industry in Europe, which stretched from the Bavarian Forest to Bohemia. Today, the competence center for glass with its own teaching and experimental glassworks regularly offers more than 300 students differentiated opportunities for training and further education. Not only the profession of glassmaker is taught there, glass formers, blowers and finishers learn there, glass apparatus manufacturers, precision opticians and process mechanics, glassworks technicians; brand new is the class for product design.

    Article Number 41420

      Height 15 cm, Ø 19.5 cm. Weight 1.4 kg.

This bowl is actually formed the same way as hollow glassware would have been made in ancient times - using a blowpipe. The glassmaker blows hot molten glass into a preform made of steel until the molten glass takes on the desired shape and relief-like bumps are formed.
When still hot, the glassmaker turns the glass in coloring powder, heats it again and, in a series of stages, creates the final shape. This craft is still taught at the "Glasfachschule" in Zwiesel, Bavaria.
