When the wasps and flies buzz in August, it can occasionally be helpful to set up an insect trap jar like this one near the coffee table. The large jar is filled with an attractant (sugar solution acidified with vinegar for wasps, vinegar solution for fruit flies) and the insects follow it. They fly into the jar from below and remain trapped until - when the cake is eaten - you release them by pulling out the cork at the top.
