Here you’ll find one of Japan’s best-selling teapots. The bulbous borosilicate glass vessel with a wide opening accommodates an equally generously sized tea strainer made of fine-mesh stainless steel. Hario is the manufacturer of our Japanese green tea pot. Founded in Tokyo in 1921, the company specialized from the very beginning in the in-house production of laboratory glassware. It was only a small step from there to producing the first kitchen and household items made from this heat- and temperature-change-resistant material—for example, the coffee maker with the evocative name Hario V60 achieved worldwide fame. Today, production is “chimney-free,” meaning that the glass is melted using an energy-efficient, electrically powered process that does not rely on fossil fuels.

Borosilicate glass is considered impact-resistant and shatterproof. Nevertheless, you should handle this teapot with the same care as any other item made of “regular” glass, because borosilicate glass is under tension to ensure that the vessels are also suitable for hot beverages. Microscopically fine cracks in the material—caused, for example, by impacts or blows, such as those resulting from the dishwasher cleaning process—or material fatigue due to aging can cause the stress balance to be disrupted, leading to the glass breaking.
