During the retting process, which lasts several weeks, the pectins in the plant stems dissolve naturally with the help of microorganisms, and the solid woody components separate from the fibers. The separated components serve as natural fertilizer for the soil. The long fibers are then extracted through mechanical breaking, beating, and scutching. Field retting is a resource-efficient process that alternatives such as water retting or chemical retting cannot match. This is because these methods require large amounts of water and energy and place an additional burden on the environment with chemicals.
