A low version of the raised bed is the so-called tomato ring, an unjustly forgotten garden utensil that creates optimal growing conditions for plants that need a lot of nutrients and also love a "warm foot" - such as tomatoes. During the growing season, the organic waste produced in the house and garden can be "disposed of" directly into the ring (which has of course first been filled with good garden soil and fine compost); the decomposition processes that occur then provide the soil with warmth and a good supply of nutrients for the vegetable plants.
