Pure white and featuring a jacquard pattern, Matelassé bedspreads and throws are among the classics in the Mediterranean region—in Italy and Spain just as much as in Portugal, where the production of this fabric is a specialty. As a double-weave fabric, Matelassé always appears slightly padded. Two separate warp and weft systems are used in its production. The yarn count of the top fabric is Nm 68/2 in the warp and Nm 17 in the weft; the yarn count of the lower fabric is also Nm 68/2 in the warp and Nm 10/2 in the weft.
The floral pattern stands out in relief on the top side, accentuated by a coarse weft. The bedspread and matching pillowcases are manufactured by a weaving mill in northern Portugal that specializes in matelassé production.

The yarn count is a textile unit of length, we specify it in Nm (metric number), whereby the higher the number, the finer the yarn. A yarn count of Nm 100 means that 100 meters of yarn weigh 1 gram. An additional number is added if the yarn is twisted from several single yarns, for example Nm 100/3 for a yarn made from three single yarns. Another designation is the yarn count, other measurements are tex, dtex or denier (den). Denier is a textile unit of weight that is only used for fine tights. It indicates how much 9,000 meters of yarn weigh: At 15 denier, 9,000 meters of the yarn in question weigh 15 grams. The international Tex system, in which the weight of 1,000 meters of yarn is specified, is now much more common.
