Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834-1919), a doctor of medicine, habilitated zoologist and, not least, philosopher and pioneer of Darwinism, was remembered by the general public above all for his "Art Forms of Nature" (1899-1904), and his importance in the field of scientific illustration is undisputed.

Whether plant or animal life, on land or in the sea, whether unicellular organisms or complex organisms: Haeckel captured with scientific precision and artistic flair what was revealed to him in perfect natural symmetry. Radiolarians and jellyfish, mosses and orchids, boxfish and antelopes, birds, bats and slugs - nothing seemed obvious to Haeckel, he subjected everything to close scrutiny. His illustrations influenced generations of subsequent artists, and his work resonated particularly strongly in Art Nouveau.
