Nature's memory is an art

Is this nature or art? Both. When observed intensively, the forms of nature reveal such astonishing diversity and complexity that their artistic aesthetics emerge naturally, as it were, in a way that ensures the survival of the species. Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834-1919), a doctor of medicine, habilitated zoologist and, not least, philosopher and pioneer of Darwinism, was remembered by the general public above all for his "Art Forms of Nature" (1899-1904), and his importance in the field of scientific illustration is undisputed.

Whether plant or animal life, on land or in the sea, whether unicellular organisms or complex organisms: Haeckel captured with scientific precision and artistic flair what was revealed to him in perfect natural symmetry. Radiolarians and jellyfish, mosses and orchids, boxfish and antelopes, birds, bats and slugs - nothing seemed obvious to Haeckel, he subjected everything to close scrutiny. His illustrations influenced generations of subsequent artists, and his work resonated particularly strongly in Art Nouveau. Reprints of his illustrations conquered the poster walls of the world - and also elevate the card images of this memory game to small works of art. The motifs on the 25 pairs of cards demonstrate the astonishing symmetries and incredible inventiveness of nature - and are sure to stay in your memory in a playful way.
