    General Information

    Stopping confidence

Fortan may be kissed not only in the doorway under the mistletoe, but already in front of the house and apartment door - and this as it were long and extensively: The hand-felted mistletoe wreath is made of pure new wool and is therefore definitely more durable than a wreath woven from real mistletoe. And if you want to take the expression of romantic or friendly affection into your house and home, you can just as easily weave these wreaths into your table decorations. With its discreet-filigree design, the mistletoe wreath on every festive table sets an accent worth seeing.

Wreaths are probably as old as human heads and dwellings. If, for example, the ancient Germanic peoples wanted to avert disaster with door wreaths, the Greeks and Romans pressed their chosen laurel wreaths on the head and Polynesians still welcome their visitors with flower wreaths, which they put them as a sign of hospitality around the neck. Mistletoe has a special place in this circle. Just think of the Germanic goddess Frigga, who was so happy about the revival of her son Balder, who had been killed by a mistletoe arrow, that she kissed everyone who passed under the tree with the mistletoe (this is where the kissing custom comes from). Or to the cultic action of the druid Getafix of the Asterix comics, who regularly cut mistletoe in the trees for his healing and magic potions. Whether kiss, cure or spell, one thing is certain in popular belief: mistletoe gives confidence by overcoming darkness.

A Fair Collaboration. Gry & Sif

During her backpacking tour through Nepal, the Dane Gry Staunstrup got to know the astonishing openness and warmth of the country’s inhabitants, and their craftsmanship bedazzled her. She was able to observe in detail how adeptly and skilfully Nepalese women felted wool into a wide variety of objects. Staunstrup felt it was time to make something good out of the untapped potential, and an idea was born: to combine Nepalese handicrafts with Danish design. And the idea was immediately followed by action.

The company Gry & Sif started producing a variety of products made of wool felt in Nepal in 2000. The designs created by Gry Staunstrup are as remarkable as they are understated and, characteristic of Danish design, at the same time fresh and merry. Nepalese women turn them into products employing traditional handicrafts. Fair Trade certified by now, Gry & Sif stands for fair wages and working conditions, environmentally conscious production and transparency. The company exclusively sources pure new wool from New Zealand sheep for the felting; each of the resulting products is handmade and unique.
