Petromax High-Powered Lamp
High-powered lamp. Petromax. The eponymous model. Since 1910.
Petromax was developed at the beginning of the last century by Berlin’s councilor of commerce, Max Graetz, named “Petroleum Maxe,” of Ehrich & Graetz.?With all of its accessories it is much more than simply a continually operating emergency light: due to its impressive light output of 400 watts, it can serve as an energy independent, truly high performing light source for gardens and patios (the German military and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief use the lamps as work lights during their deployments), and the separately contained cooktops reliably replace camping stoves with gas cartridges. Operation is truly uncomplicated: you attach the gas mantle, fill the tank with clean petroleum and set, by activating the pump attached to the foot of the lamp, the necessary pressure (this can be read on the manometer that has been attached at the filling opening). A carburetor leads the petroleum into the gas mantle, on whose surface the burning takes place. Ignition ensues by a simple contraption for preheating: on top of the petroleum tank attached is a small bowl, into which you can pour some spiritus; at ignition, the spiritus flam warms the petroleum. (Alternatively, the Petromax is also equipped with a rapid quick-igniter.) We must point out that Petromax produces strong operational noises; you’ll always hear how it works.
