Rapeseed has always been one of the most important sources of oil here, but is also important for crop rotation in agriculture, partly because it can break chains of infection in cereal diseases. While rapeseed oil was primarily used for lamp oil or lubricating oil for industry and soap production until the middle of the 19th century, it was soon replaced by cheap petroleum-based fuels and edible oils from overseas. It is only since the 1970s that rapeseed oil can also be used as cooking oil and animal feed, thanks to new varieties that contain almost no bitter erucic acid. Since then, the area under cultivation has been steadily increasing and the possible uses have also been further developed.
