The Sjöstrand espresso machine sets out to dispel all preconceptions about capsule coffee machines. Successfully, in our opinion—this machine has certainly won us over in more ways than one. Since 2011, the Swedish brand Sjöstrand has combined a passion for Scandinavian minimalist design with the joy of authentic Italian coffee. The core concept—to bring to market a convenient appliance featuring the classic barista design of a portafilter machine with a high-gloss stainless steel housing—has been perfectly executed down to the last detail. Operation is intuitive: insert a coffee capsule, press down the lever on the side of the housing, and you’re done. (The system is compatible with standard Nespresso® capsules.) Cleaning this machine is also straightforward. You should simply empty the capsule container, which collects the used capsules, on a regular basis and give it a thorough wipe-down while you’re at it (the container holds a maximum of 15 capsules). The espresso-brewing parts of the machine, as well as the housing itself, can be cleaned every now and then with a suitable machine cleaner.

We don’t need to emphasize that the “Sjöstrand” brews a truly excellent, flavorful coffee—as if we’d ever be willing to compromise on that point! The choice is yours: Would you like an espresso, or perhaps you’d prefer a caffè lungo for breakfast or in the afternoon? Both are possible. The respective brew volume is preset but can be adjusted to suit your taste. The brewing temperature is kept constant and, like the pump pressure (19 bar), is optimized for espresso extraction.

Of course, we’re well aware of all the drawbacks of the capsule coffee system, starting with packaging waste. Standard coffee capsules are mostly made of aluminum; their production alone consumes vast amounts of energy, and they end up in the massive mountain of waste in no time. The reason we nevertheless chose the Sjöstrand espresso machine is not only—but primarily—because it uses coffee capsules that can be disposed of in the organic waste bin. Coffee to coffee, so to speak, because the Sjöstrand capsules consist largely of coffee waste—more specifically, the silver skins that envelop the seeds of the coffee cherry (the coffee bean) and are removed during roasting. Isn’t that interesting? The capsule coffee method also offers an advantage: the ground coffee remains airtight in the capsules until brewing and loses none of its aroma or flavor. This is how the exceptional coffee flavor is achieved—cup after cup, with consistently reliable quality every time. And all of this without having to worry about the right portion size or grind size.
