General Information

Safe Hiding Place.

Squirrels are solitary animals. Normally a squirrel will occupy up to eight lodgings at any given time and shuttle between the different accommodations, sleeping and eating in one or the other of them. The squirrel will also use the various nests, or dreys, to store its provisions of nuts, fruits and seeds. That is why particularly the young offspring often have a hard time staking out their own territories, because the parents have already claimed all of the suitable locations. Dwelling undomesticated but in close proximity to humans, squirrels lack good hiding places — especially in tidy, carefully tended urban gardens. Any larger, contiguous wooded areas in the vicinity will be dedicated for the most part to forestry and cannot provide appropriate refuge. This makes it all the more worthwhile to hang up a squirrel drey in your own garden and offer your animal neighbours the most natural alternatives possible for nesting and sleeping.
This particular drey is also suitable as a shelter for larger birds and is made of natural, untreated reeds woven around a sturdy metal frame. It stems from a certified facility in Bangladesh, in which such weaving is still done traditionally by hand. The squirrel drey will hold up for a number of seasons (and the occasional holes in the weave that may appear with time can be repaired by the nest’s inhabitant with easily accesible nest-building materials). The drey should be hung in a tree, well-hidden, at a height of about 2.5 to 3 m. To make the den an attractive lodging for the animals, we recommend placing some appropriate food in it before hanging it up.
