General Information

Lightweight and cooling. Summer comforter with hemp filling

Using hemp as a filling for a summer comforter is unusual, but obvious, since it has outstanding moisture-regulating abilities, which it can display particularly well in summer. Like linen, hemp fibers can quickly absorb a great deal of moisture - up to a third of their own weight - without feeling damp. But they also wick moisture away just as quickly, which is why hemp is perceived as cooling. At the same time, it ensures a dry sleeping climate even in midsummer temperatures - ideal for tropical nights, but also for cooler summer nights. This is because, unlike linen, hemp fibers can also provide warmth because they are hollow on the inside and store heat-insulating air here. Another plus, especially for those who prefer lightweight blankets: hemp fibers have a low dead weight. For our summer blanket they are processed into a loose, breathable fleece, the blanket is therefore particularly light and lies pleasantly airy on the body. The ticking is made of fine, skin-friendly cotton satin, the cotton for it comes from controlled organic cultivation.
Our summer blanket made of hemp can not be washed, but that does not matter at all, because the hemp fibers are due to their smooth surface and the fact that they do not contain proteins (such as keratin and lanolin), naturally antimicrobial, antistatic, stain-resistant and, incidentally, very well tolerated by allergy sufferers. We recommend that you regularly air the blanket well.

Ancient yet modern. Hemp

Along with flax and nettle, hemp is one of our oldest useful and cultivated plants. Until the 19th century, these plants were important raw materials for the clothing industry, for ropes, twine, sailcloth, and much more. With the Industrial Revolution and the rise of cotton, these robust fiber plants lost their significance, even though they stand out as fast-growing, natural raw materials right from the start—during cultivation and harvest.
For example, hemp requires significantly less water than cotton. Hemp is undemanding and pest-resistant, so no herbicides, insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers are needed during cultivation, harvesting, or processing. Thanks to its extensive root system, this deep-rooted plant helps aerate the soil, which has a positive effect on soil fertility. Hemp also suppresses weed growth, benefiting the crops grown later in the crop rotation. But even as a monoculture, hemp can be grown on the same plot for several years without any problems thanks to its self-compatibility.
Finally, as a textile, hemp is also superior to cotton in many respects: the strength and wear resistance of its long, tear-resistant fibers are significantly better, which is why even sailcloth used to be made from hemp. Even today, extraction and processing are very labor-intensive, but thanks to new methods, it is now possible to spin very fine, uniform yarns from the rather coarse hemp fiber bundles—the kind needed for clothing and bedding. Its use as a filling for bedding, on the other hand, is relatively new.
Until 1996, the cultivation of industrial hemp was banned in Germany; since then, although the share of domestic and European hemp production has increased, it is still far from sufficient to meet the sharply rising demand. The majority of processed hemp fibers therefore come from China.
