The gentle way. Burning incense cones
Incense cones offer the gentlest way to burn incense. The basic ingredients for these incense cones are wood and the hand-tapped, fragrant resin of the black pine. Fine wild herbs and aromatic plants from our own organic farm at the foot of the Hohe Wand are added; some of the incense resins used are also hand-tapped. Coarse aromatic ingredients are ground, mixed by hand with pure linden charcoal from a traditional Austrian charcoal kiln, and kneaded with makko—a binding agent made from tree bark according to Asian tradition. The incense cones release their scent only after being lit, as no additional or subsequent scenting with essential oils is used. As with Pechen, all steps in the process are carried out on-site and largely by hand. This ensures that every single incense cone contains only what is intended—purely plant-based ingredients, with the exception of honey and propolis in some fragrance blends.
The recipes for the incense cones contain exclusively incense herbs from the Central European tradition, which are compiled here into themed sets. To burn the incense cones, place them either in an incense burner or simply on a plate with sand, light them, and, as soon as the cone glows, blow it out again. Thanks to this gentle smoldering, the incense does not burn up but slowly releases its fragrance. The forest incense cones are slightly “coarser.” This is intentional, as aroma is lost with each grinding process. That is why the largest possible pieces of the aromatic ingredients are added to the blends. The scent may change slightly as it smolders, depending on which ingredients the embers are currently reaching. For a more intense experience, you can also fan the fragrant smoke toward your nose with your flat hand.
Tradition unites. Incense cones from Waldweihrauch
The Austrian incense manufacturer Waldweihrauch combines two traditions: incense burning and pitch production. The ancient craft of pitch-making is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is rarely practiced anymore. Extracted from the resin of black pines, pitch was once an important raw material. It forms the basis for these incense cones, which Waldweihrauch founders Angelika and Florian Gruber craft by hand. The two cultural anthropologists discovered their passion for incense burning in their youth and expanded their knowledge of incense materials and their effects during their numerous travels through Europe, India, and Southeast Asia.
