The highlight of this scarf is the different colors. While one side of the scarf features a fine stripe pattern in blue and natural, the other side is in green and natural. A wider contrasting stripe forms the end of each scarf. The smooth knitted fabric made from pure wool has a soft feel and the wool used comes from certified organic animal husbandry.

Behind the walls of the McKernan Woollen Mills in Tuamgraney, in the Irish county of Clare, Anke and Eugene McKernan have been crafting fine woven and knitted scarves since 1985—currently with a staff of five. In doing so, they bridge the past and the present. For example, they weave on old Hattersley looms—true classics among mechanical looms that have long since gone out of production and are therefore carefully maintained. The same goes for a roughly 50-year-old Stoll knitting machine, which the McKernans have paired with their “most recent” acquisition: two computer-controlled machines. So much for the technical aspects: What makes their products so unique, however, is above all the deep understanding of materials, colors, and patterns that stems from pure hand weaving—and the enthusiasm with which everyone in this family-run business is fully committed to their craft.
