General Information

Christmas ray of hope

For generations, the tradition of the Christmas pyramid has been cultivated in the Erzgebirge with folk art. This table pyramid comes from a Seiffen manufactory and is designed as a classic one-storey revolving play, which shows the high level of craftsmanship in every detail. The winter motif spanned by the pyramid arch with a central fir tree, child and snowman on a sleigh is made of solid beech wood and is so delicate and simple in design that the pyramid proves to be a moving bright spot in any Christmas decoration. Solid birch plywood is used for the impeller: This gives it the lightness to be set in a fluid rotation by the rising warmth of the candle flames. All the figures are turned by hand and sanded velvety smooth, with the two small chip trees in particular requiring a great deal of experience and dexterity - only a few craftspeople today still have the know-how to chip the trees so perfectly. The candle holders are lined with metal plates into which standard-sized tea lights can be inserted.

Christmas pyramids are one of the most atmospheric lighting features of the Christmas season. Whether large or small, at a public Christmas market or on a private table: with their moving interplay of light and figure, they create a festive, warmly glowing atmosphere and attract everyone's attention. We owe their development in particular to the artisans of the Erzgebirge, who gradually combined the medieval revolving tree, the 18th century light frame and (according to some sources) the principle of the horse gopel to create today's pyramid art.

Folk art from the Erzgebirge. Seiffen

The fact that a famous wood art developed in the originally densely forested Erzgebirge is not only explained by the availability of the material. As a branch of industry, handicrafts became all the more important as the local mining industry rapidly lost resources and profitability. Folk art slipped into this gap, which mining - no less than Christmas - still shaped with numerous motifs. A center of wood art emerged around Seiffen, where one of the first specialized trade schools was founded in 1853 to promote handicrafts. In the so-called Toy Corner, small and large craft businesses still produce the classics of the folk art of the Erzgebirge: from hoop animals and smoking men to miner figures and nutcrackers to candle arches and wing pyramids.
