Carving

The basics of woodworking and wood processing were common knowledge in earlier centuries, because many practical everyday objects could already be made from wood with simple means, and the material itself grew almost everywhere. Today, this everyday knowledge has largely disappeared. So on the one hand there is elaborate handicraft and on the other hand (especially in furniture making) industrialized mass production. But exactly this lost middle can be easily reconquered, because carving combines many basics of woodworking. Thus one learns quite incidentally and almost playfully which tool is to be used when and for which purpose, which wood is better or worse suited for carving and - quite generally - which ideas can be realized at all.
