    General Information

White innocence, red blood, sweet Christmas

Our candy canes are felted from pure new wool; they come in a set of 3 and spread as a wreath, tree and window decorations just as Christmas mood as part of the festive table decorations.

In the U.S. they are not to be excluded from the Christmas season, there one celebrates on December 26 even the National Candy Cane Day. As indispensable as candy canes may be today as Christmas decorations in our country, the origin of this custom is unclear. Some locate its "legendary" origin in Cologne, where in 1670 the director of the Cologne Cathedral choir is said to have commissioned a candy baker to make such candy canes for the children of the Nativity play: The white symbolizes the innocence of the Christ child, the red the blood of Christ, summed up in the curved shape of the shepherd's crook.
The Danish company Én Gry & Sif is more likely to refer to a Scandinavian tradition. In 1859, Swedish baker Anna Eriksson received permission to open a bakery in the small Swedish town of Gränna, where she also offered her red-and-white striped "polkagrisar" ("polka pigs") with a peppermint flavor. To this day, Gränna is considered one of the centers of Swedish candy cane manufacturing.

A Fair Collaboration. Gry & Sif

During her backpacking tour through Nepal, the Dane Gry Staunstrup got to know the astonishing openness and warmth of the country’s inhabitants, and their craftsmanship bedazzled her. She was able to observe in detail how adeptly and skilfully Nepalese women felted wool into a wide variety of objects. Staunstrup felt it was time to make something good out of the untapped potential, and an idea was born: to combine Nepalese handicrafts with Danish design. And the idea was immediately followed by action.

The company Gry & Sif started producing a variety of products made of wool felt in Nepal in 2000. The designs created by Gry Staunstrup are as remarkable as they are understated and, characteristic of Danish design, at the same time fresh and merry. Nepalese women turn them into products employing traditional handicrafts. Fair Trade certified by now, Gry & Sif stands for fair wages and working conditions, environmentally conscious production and transparency. The company exclusively sources pure new wool from New Zealand sheep for the felting; each of the resulting products is handmade and unique.
