    General Information

    Exclusive

We have a weakness for historical templates - for good reason, because what has stood the test of time is a testament to quality and great utility. Like the old doctor's bags, for example, which - made of strong leather and finished with sturdy clasps - were designed for one-time purchase and daily use over a long working life. We have them manufactured by experts according to classic models in the same material opulence that makes a long bag life possible in the first place. You can get the Weekender in this design with cognac-colored bull leather and the lining made of sheepskin only at Manufactum.

Elegant exception. With the makings of an heirloom

For this travel bag from the Feinäschnerei Franz Hammann were the old doctor's bags, which were designed entirely for stability, durability and functionality. They not only withstood daily wear and tear for the duration of their working lives, but as heirlooms they usually lasted a second time.
Hammann manufactures the Weekender in this size and opulent design especially for Manufactum: The best bull hides of southern German and Austrian origin are used, which are vegetable-tanned and aniline-dyed in Italy. In the process, the pigments penetrate deep into the leather so that its natural surface remains visible and a beautiful patina can form over time. The body is crafted with neatly turned edges, and open leather edges are carefully smoothed, dyed and waxed. The handles are lined on the inside with cotton wicking cord, which adds volume and stabilizes so the handles are comfortable to hold even when the bag is full. Leather trim further protects the corners, and the reinforced bottom stands on six metal feet. If necessary, a shoulder strap can be attached to the body via sturdy leather receptacles and solid metal fittings.

    Large opening. Good visibility

As with the earlier in Germany common doctor's bags are also with our Weekender both brackets worked concealed (old Italian models about have outside visible metal brackets). On the one hand, they allow quick opening across the entire width, and on the other hand, quick overview and access to the contents - an unbeatable advantage when packing and on the road, when you have to "live out of a suitcase".
Inside, the bag is lined with soft, natural-colored sheepskin, which is also used for the two slip pockets incorporated on the sides. The extremely sturdy, wide zipper comes from Italy, from a company that otherwise manufactures components for military and geological outfitters. Polished teeth ensure that it is very smooth and poses no threat to delicate fabrics. A zippered pocket on the outside holds travel tickets, cards and small items, tabs with collar button closures on both outer sides are provided for umbrella or newspaper.

Finest Leather Goods by F. Hammann, Offenbach.

The “Fine leather goods factory” Franz Hammann based in Offenbach (one of the German centres of leather goods manufacturing) is one of the oldest leather manufacturers in Germany. The family-owned company has been producing high-quality leather goods and travel accessories for five generations. The Hessian leather goods are as sophisticated as they are durable; some models require the use of old special machines. Hammann has decades-old experience in leather crafts, especially in producing leather bags and cases complete with frames and handles. Precise workmanship and high-quality materials play an even more significant role here than in leather crafts anyway. To ensure the quality of its leather products, Hammann produces at its headquarters (and has done so since 1864) while processing exclusively full-grain leather of European origin. Locks and fittings are made in Germany. Here too, the details make the difference: all locks and fittings are milled from solid brass and alloy steel and get polished by hand. You might recognize the mirror-bright surfaces featuring a shine that “drum-polished sheet metal parts” could never give off.
